Undergoing Successive Liposuction

Removing too much fat from certain targeted areas in the body poses many risks for the patient. There are also health problems associated with having too many liposuction procedures performed on the body in a single day.  More often than not, the danger of liposuction lies not in the practice but rather in the patient’s decision.

Some of our doctors do these all together especially if the fat to be removed is not too much, and also depending on the total number of surgeries the patient will undergo together knowing  the fact that the more surgeries a patient will have, the healing process will take longer and it will be longer for the patient to be able to get back to normal activities.

It is also highly dependent on patient's choice and patient's tolerance to pain and discomfort.  It is true that having liposuction both on the abdomen and back at the same time will be quite uncomfortable for the patient but some may choose to still undergo both procedures at the same time.

The best way to handle this issue,  it would be best to first have the patient consider if she can handle the discomfort, and second, it will be inquired from the doctor if he will do it.  If the patient chooses to have this on separate times, then the patient will be advised to have the procedure done again in about 4-6 months after the first one because we expect that during that time, the body has already more or less completely healed.

Getting too much liposuction can lead to many complications such as dents, sagging skin, lumps and other skin problems. Overexposure to anesthesia also has its own set of side effects.

To avoid these complications, it’s important that patients understand the effects of having multiple liposuctions in a short amount of time. Also, it’s important to understand that liposuction is not a permanent substitute for weight loss and maintenance. People often find themselves undergoing repeated liposuction treatments because they find their fat “growing back”.
